Jay-Z spotted Kanye before anyone believed in him. Deion Sanders saw HBCU football's potential before ESPN did. Your grandmother knew which neighbors were struggling before anyone said a word. A futurist is that same person — trained to read the future. The tool they use is called a signal.

STRONG SIGNAL
This is real, it's happening now, and it's growing. The data backs it up.
Example: HBCU enrollment hitting a 30-year high. That's not rumor — it's showing up in application numbers across the country, changing how schools recruit and how brands invest. When something's in the data AND visible in real life, that's a strong signal. You can plan around it.

WEAK SIGNAL
Something small that COULD become big. Too early to know for sure — but smart people are watching.
Example: In 2003, some kids were posting videos of themselves online. Most adults called it a waste of time. The ones who spotted that as a weak signal understood YouTube and TikTok before everyone else. Weak signals are early. They're not guaranteed — but ignoring them is how you get caught off guard.

Loud. Gets attention. But it's hype — not real change. Don't build your future around it.
Example: Every year, someone says "hip-hop is dying." Every year, hip-hop stays the world's most streamed genre. Headlines aren't signals — patterns in the data are. Noise makes you react. A real signal makes you plan.
